i can't call my friends because i think they are sleeping.

i had a dream last night that i came into some money. i went to the bank and asked for it all in 50s. there were so many 50s that they wouldn't fit in my wallet, then my purse, in all my bags and pockets so i kept calling in my friends and stuffing their pockets with fifty dollar bills, one after another and the 50s kept coming. i even woke up before we had it all.

sunday, september 6

last night bill noticed that everyone on his phone book was there at manny's house for dinner.

first stop- pick up bill and the boys from blueberry hill. it's where he parks his car while he's away so he doesn't get street sweeping tickets.

the black trees look like dinosaur bones and when we figured out it was sunday alyssa said "we're late for church!"

the bikini lounge lived up to all the hype.

we slept in an empty apartment.

monday, september 7

bill made up the birthday game and by some luck his name was picked first. happy bday, dude.

outside albuquerque we saw this huge gorgeous moon. we kept going back and forth if it was fake or real. there was a big lightning storm in the distance.

the show in santa fe was just us. and crazy. everybody played as one band, morgan was in the wheelchair for a while, bill kept getting shocked and everybody took their shirts off.

molly let us sleep in her hotel room, which was a sweet sweet thing.

tuesday, september 8

i won the birthday draw today and i can already tell it's gonna be a good one.

new mexico has the biggest clouds i've ever seen.

when we got into doloras, alyssa and i went down to the river. the girls were already there throwing rocks and keeley was sitting in the water by a big broken branch. later alyssa and i forged our way to the middle of the river and sat for a long time on a big rock.

we got free beer at the brewery and the show was wild. the demon song was out of this world. bill sang it to a little girl, charlie made up some sweet lyrics.

we went to some dude's house where he gave us a ton of beer and drinks and we smoked and danced in his living room. the cops came. on the porch, a moth was crawling all over chris's hands and arms. jordan and danielle slept in the crib.

it was hands down the best birthday i ever had.

wednesday, september 9

chris got up real early and moved to sleep on the lawn. i gave ben a cigarette and he gave me a cup of coffee and picked me a little thing of fresh mint. he left for work and we hung around for a while.

happy birthday, keeley!

we made it to mesa verde and it was so beautiful. a couple of deer were running around. we walked around the narive american cliff dwellings for a while and then it started to pour. jordan and i ran up the hill screaming and laughing and soaking wet. big thunder and lightning on the way down the hill.

the drive to conifer was long. we listened to "night is coming" and told scary stories and then watched a scary movie in the back of the van. mike turner drove and we screamed a lot when stuff popped out.

later danielle, alyssa and i talked for a long time about women and trying to be a good woman.

we got to chris's house at 3am and went right to sleep.

thursday, september 10

i feel like writing a hundred love letters.

alyssa and i tried to clean out the van.

it's jordan's birthday today!

allen picked up matt from the airport in denver and later i went and got allison. the show had red lights everywhere and dhani went wild. i love when he dances. we went back to conifer and pat let us all stay in his huge house. i saw the moon through the telescope. we all looked through books about alaska and grizzlies and mike read out loud until it was time to sleep.

friday, september 11

thomas made everyone a huge breakfast with charlie. everyone was in the kitchen cutting up fruit and avocado.

dhani's the birthday boy and allison and i made him a flower crown- yellow, white, purple and brown.

i laid in keeley's nest for a while.

we played games and the dudes painted new red river shirts.

on the way down the hill we saw a big herd of elk. we all yelled. they heard us.

we drank whiskey in the van before the show in ft. collins and after the show we hung out in the parking lot. clayton tried to play a prank on bill but it didn't work. then we drove all night. alyssa, bill, allison, manny and i all slept in the basement at one point or another. the basement is the floor of the van.

some time after midnight when we were all awake, dhani picked mike turner's name out of the birthday cup. everybody started screaming all crazy and bill was swerving around the road. we sang to him all happy.

saturday, september 12

we got into boise and checked everything out. some of the boys went skating and everyone else took a nap in the park. later some of us went down to the river- we had to walk across a big log to get to the other side- and dhani and draeger went swimming. draeger looked really happy.

this show was insane- it started with everyone on stage singing milk & honey back to back with the demon song. after everybody played we all went crazy on the dance floor chanting each other's names and stuff like "i'm too drunk to fuck, put me behind the wheel." we danced on broken glass on accident and lifted mike turner up in the air like a god.

all the girls were screaming at each other "he's hungrey for your love!" "there are too many good things!" "we'll all be dead soon!"

thank god for dan. he drove our van and we were shaking like crazy up the hill, winding around and blasting once in a lifetime. we parked and put together tents and some people slept on the top of the vans, or in the vans, or where ever. it was pitch black except for the stars and we could see the whole city from up there.

sunday, september 13

this morning we packed up our stuff, picked three more birthdays and hit the road. drew, alyssa and thomas- happy birthday. it is morgan's real birthday.

we're on the 45th parallel.

it's getting real windy and manny's been driving the whole day. i've got the front seat.

driving next to the river, we made thomas a birthday card. "this is your last night on earth" -everybody

portland makes me feel good. especially this house. i liked watching clayton find sterling. these dudes got chickens.

the old church is so big and beautiful. allison and i drank in the van during sound check and then ten minutes before the show we found ourselves in there with everybody, seriously everybody, drinking and hugging.

they killed it, of course, and we all went wild. we lifted nelson up in the air. we had to.

i was real tired and happy by the time we got to draeger and charlie's house. i don't remember anything except looking around at everybody, and the sandwich chris bought me from 7-11.

monday, september 14

we went to tom's for breakfast, hung around the house, took showers. i went on a walk with danielle. she picked us apples and they were good.

a bunch of us went to the park and everybody spun everybody else all fast on the merry-go-round and manny kept throwing the basketball at us. thomas tried to teach bill a skate trick but bill just ended up going down the slide on his stomach.

nelson made fish and chips for dinner. it was so good. some people went to bed and rest of us watched die hard 2: die harder.

tuesday, september 15

for breakfast thomas made the french toast and jordan made the potatoes. allison made me coffee.

later all the girls went to the chicken coup and watched the chickens eat leftover bread and watermelon.

nelson took me upstairs and showed me pictures of his mom.

we all said goodbye in the front yard.

before we could turn off 41st, draeger cut us off and parked in the middle of the street. we all jumped out to hug him, gave everybody another look and left.

i was sad for the first hour of the drive home. then i was real fucking happy.

please god, has anybody seen manny's breadstick?

i'm going wild. i wake up every morning happy as hell, i drink a ton of coffee, i stare down fiona until she barks at me, i walk around, look up houses for rent in portland, i get paid and put it in my savings. i fantasize about presents i could give to people, i almost crash my car laughing so hard, every day somebody has a big new idea and we fit it in. nobody's ever had it this good. the boys are supposed to be leaving at the end of october but the plan is always changing and last night allison drew out the blueprints of the farmhouse to show me and i've never been so in for anything. i wanna work. hard. for this life with these people. i told bill this morning "i cant be without you on thanksgiving" and he wrote back "you wont be" and i never felt so good.

i'm laying on this weird slant, the mattress is all messed up but i kinda like it. i keep sending myself text messages so i remember stuff. everybody does that, right? my mom killed a black widow on the porch with one of my shoes tonight. it was the first real spider i saw in the spider cave this year. my first boyfriend turned 25 today. my first boyfriend had a chocolate labrador named indiana jones. he played football and the saxophone and all the teachers in high school loved him. we would hide from our friends and lock ourselves in the upstairs room and we had to walk everywhere because neither of us had cars yet. he liked to call me katherine and remembered everything i said. a few weeks ago i started writing a love song and so far the only lyrics are "your beard is weird" but i figure if i sing it high and slow and pretty it might come off the way i mean it.

i clear your stuff off the bed so i can lay down and see your face at the same time. you're standing right there, swaying with your eyes closed. here comes a sound i won't ever forget. it rolls out like a beach blanket, i see images of you in that good light then suddenly i'm alone in my car, sweating by the pool house, locked in the boys room, backseat riding, always evaporating, alone in your apartment on christmas eve, swinging in the doorway, by the fire in your grandma's backyard, over both bridges, sleeping on the couch, in front of your old house, soaked clothes, big dinners, through walls, open windows, i see you sitting on the side of the tub, i see you in the crowded kitchen passing out beers saying 'just like that, just like that.' you open your eyes and tell me 'this is where you come in.'

she looks just like a woman. she laughs a woman's beautiful laugh and bounces a baby on her lap like aunts do at birthday parties. she has a woman's face set with strong, feminine, authoritative features. do i look this grown? i remember her squinting in the sun. i remember her wielding a garden hose and new braids, her boyish eyebrows and dirty arms. i remember that look on her face before she turned, always running, back to the house yelling, "i found it under a brick! and we can keep him! because he's a secret!"
